5Accurate, Reliable, Controllable via Home Automation, but DON'T PAY for NEXIA
By MJC
Normally, I'd knock it down a couple stars for the monthly fee associated with Nexia, which adds way too much to the cost of the product and makes recovering the cost through schedule based thermostat adjustments highly improbable if not impossible for the average home. But, you can use this otherwise great programmable & Z-Wave compatible thermostat with other home automation systems that don't require monthly fees.

I found this thermostat to be very accurate for both temperature and humidity by comparing it to several Oregon Scientific sensors in our home. That's always important for a thermostat but even more so when you want to use it with a home automation / smart setup. For example, our house is set to "away" mode for a long weekend in the hot and humid summers, the Veralite tells this thermostat to raise the temperature to 80 degrees (or higher). However, it monitors the humidity levels. If the humidity in the house goes above 62%, the veralite will (1) lower the HVAC setting so the AC will lower the humidity, then send me a text message so that I can remotely check the temp and humidity. Once the humidity is under control, the Veralite tells the Trane to raise the temperature to the more miserly level, again. It's a great way to minimize my power bill, but to avoid the risks of mold growth. This TRANE is also linked to several motion sensors in the house, making it like a NEST thermostat that graduated magna cum laude.

Numbers / settings are easy to read. The temperature adjustment buttons are easy to push arrows that anyone can use if they want to walk over and adjust the settings.

As mentioned above, I have this connected to Veralite Z-Wave controller, which Amazon sells at a very good price: Mi Casa Verde VeraLite Home Controller, White and Green The Veralite can control this thermostat along with all the other Z-Wave devices (and Insteon) and does more than Nexia WITHOUT ANY MONTHLY FEES.

2Revceived bad unit, customer service not helpful
By Corey Scott
I'm sure this thermostat works well enough, but mine was DOA - screen freezes immediately after power is connected. Trane informed me that the unit was bad, and that they would send me a replacement unit and a box to ship the old one back in. A week later, neither item ever arrived, and I got a phone call from Trane "following up" on my service request. I said I never got the new unit, and they said, "We don't handle product returns, you need to return it to the merchant to get a new one." I told them that there was no merchant, that I received the product from them to write a review for it. They insisted that they can't send me a new one. I finally gave up and put my old thermostat back in.

1COMPLETE LACK OF ANY CUSTOMER SERVICE
By Bob Condon
We bought the Schlage Link/Nexia System in Sept 2011. We were very happy with the keypad lock and wanted
to be able to program our locks and thermostat online, so we bought new locks, a bridge, and a Trane thermostat.

Now almost 2 years later, the $130 thermostat is malfunctioning. I called Schlage/Nexia and was given a number
to call Trane.

After 30-60 minutes of trying to get tech support or navigate their web site to find tech support, I discovered
that Trane doesn't have tech support. They make you call a local dealer who will no doubt charge you $150-$200
to come out and troubleshoot the thermostat. If I wanted to pay $200 for someone to tell me that I need to push
some buttons to reset it to default (a common solution these days for digital products) or that I need to replace
this $130 product after only 21 months, they could tell me that on the phone.

The end result, I will probably replace this thermostat with another Z wave thermostat from another company.

DON"T BUY TRANE unless you want a complete lack of customer service when something goes wrong.

5Remove Pellet Hopper for (Easier) Intallation
By EGS
I own the Traeger Junior, and I was unhappy with the medium setting on the three position temperature switch (it was too hot, often close to 300 degrees), so I decided to upgrade.

I recommend installing the new controller by removing the hopper:

1. Remove the two screws on the old controller.
2. Remove the pellet hopper (it's only held on by 4 screws). I also removed the 4 screws on the bottom of the hopper to make the final installation easier.
3. Feed the old controller through the front of the hopper. This will allow you to completely remove the pellet hopper and get it out of the way.
4. Install the temperature probe (RTD) per the directions; the diagram isn't great, but it's much better than the written directions.
5. Cut all the the zip ties.
6. To keep from improperly connecting the wires or having to study the wiring diagram, simply disconnect the old wires (pull apart the molex connectors with a slight rocking motion)and reconnect the new wires ONE AT A TIME.
6. At this point your done with the connections. I turned on my Traeger briefly to make sure the fans turned on and the LED illuminated. Make sure there aren't any wires interfering with either fan.
7. I used lots of zip-ties to clean up the installation.
8. Feed the new controller through the hole in the hopper.
9. Attach the hopper
10. Attach the controller
11. Look under the hopper to make sure there aren't any wires interfering with the fan(use more zip-ties if necessary), and install the bottom of the hopper.

5Definitely get this
By Veasna
I am a college student, so I bought the junior Traeger model, which does not come with the digital thermostat kit. After smoking my first set of ribs I went straight to my computer and bought this because controlling the temperature with the 3-speed was quite a pain. Many burger patties and racks of ribs later I am still completely satisfied with my purchase.

Note: This takes a bit of work to install, so unless you are at least somewhat comfortable working with electronics then I would find a friend who is to install it. Still, don't let this deter you from buying it. The kit does not require any soldering to install.

5Installation straight forward. Really enhances your Traeger grill
By gregt590
I concur that Traeger's BAC236 Digital Thermostat Kit really enhances the grill and is well worthwhile. I ordered and received mine directly from Traeger online (www.traegergrills.com), catching one of their $70 sales they periodically have on it.

I should point out that the BAC236 control unit I received looks newer and more featured than the unit shown here on Amazon, containing a separate power on/off switch, and knob settings for a Shut Down Cycle, Smoke, and 9 temperature settings mostly in 25 degree steps from 180 and 225 up through "High" (400 degrees?). Its manual says it is for Models BBQ055, BBQ070, BBQ07E and BBQ075. I ordered and successfully installed it on my model BBQ055 "Junior" grill essentially turning it into a model BBQ155 "Junior Elite".

4Watch out for "Smart Response Setting"
By L. Veal
I had to replace an older cheaper Honeywell that decided it didn't know what time of day it was.

I decided to go with this more expensive model-- but I had reservations after having read some reviews and comments elsewhere where some people complained that the furnace was always on, or they were burning more oil or gas than before. . .

I found the reason--

It's called 'Smart Response Technology'

It's 'ON' by default if you do the quick DIY install.

To turn it 'OFF' you have to download the FULL MANUAL from the Honeywell site to see how to get into the ADVANCED Settings of the device. The pamphlet you get in the package is just your BASIC setup.

I bought the programmable Honeywell to control my oil usage and keep the furnace from heating the house in the dead of the night when everyone is in bed. And I would set the Program to turn the Furnace ON and reset the Temp back to 70 degrees at 7 AM. In short-- The Furnace turns ON at 7 o'clock and in time, (20 minutes or so) the house gets warm.

What SMART RESPONSE does is uses an algorithm to attempt to get the house to the Programmed Temp BEFORE the Programmed Time. The result is the Furnace will turn ON an hour or more BEFORE the time you set to raise the temperature until it hits 70 degrees EXACTLY at 7 AM.

Okay-- it's a nice, cute helpsy idea that I'm sure a Honeywell Programmer/Engineer is rightly proud of. Problem is, the Furnace is BURNING OIL when I don't WANT IT TO.

I didn't notice what the Thermostat was doing until late one night I was watching a movie real late-- when I heard the Furnace go ON and STAY ON at 4:30 in the morning. And I was like: "WTF?" When I went to look at the Thermostat, it displayed: 'In Recovery Mode'

That was the Smart Response circuit attempting to ease the night-time temp back up to 70 degrees in time for 7 AM. Except that meant the thing was BURNING MY OIL AT 4 IN THE MORNING!! If I hadn't been awake, I would never have noticed this.

So disable "Smart Response". That way the Furnace only comes on when YOU program it to.

3Thermostat powered by battery only; can't use system power
By F1 Nut
This is a nicely designed unit, and the instructions are easy to understand and follow. However, the product description is missing an important fact in that this particular model cannot accept a power feed from the system, and therefore REQUIRES the batteries to function. If your home doesn't have a system power feed, this functionality is of course irrelevant; however for those of us with this feature, other thermostats are probably a better buy.

As of January 2011, the following Honeywell and LUX products on Amazon.com have the ability to accept system power:
Honeywell RTH7500D Conventional 7-Day Programmable Thermostat
Honeywell RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat)
Lux Products TX1500E-010 Smart Temp Programmable Thermostat

5Large display and easy to set up
By Busy Buddy
I needed to replace my fifteen year old thermostat for one which was easier to adjust and change settings if needed. I chose Honeywell as they have always gave great life and service. I am using this on a steam heat system only, so I needed to connect only two wires. I did leave the jumper in as directed in the manual. I did power off my heating equipment (very important) we don't want surprises. This thermostat has a large display which can be back-lit simply by quickly pressing one of the control buttons. I only needed to program morning and night settings, you simply skip over the times you don't want to program. When in operation it displays both set temperature and room temperature. I would have to say it is accurate within +/- 1 degree as I compared it with three other thermometers. I installed the batteries before I attached it to the wall base and did all setting and programming ahead of time. The batteries are easy to replace when needed as they fit in a flip out holder from the side, no need to remove any covers or remove the thermostat from it's base.

4reasonably reliable
By Soil Guy
I use this thermostat to turn on and off an attic fan when temperatures get too high. I've found that every few months mine needs to be turned off and reset, or the fan will just run continously. This is no big deal for my purposes, but if you use it for applications where temperature control is critical for keeping animals or plants alive, check it periodically or buy a more expensive unit.

4Accurate and a great value
By DBoz
I recently purchased two of these units to regulate the temperature in my bedroom and my living room. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. The temperature readout is spot on and it's easy to program. However I do have two complaints:

1. The unit can only program weekdays and weekends. That means you can't choose a specific day of the week to program. For example, I am never at my apartment on Saturdays, however since Saturday and Sunday must have the same schedule, as well as monday-friday, I'm wasting energy.

2. In order for this unit to work, there MUST be a ground plugged into the outlet. I bought two "DeLonghi HHP1500 Mica Panel Radiator" heaters (they are amazing, I highly recommend) which don't have a ground. In order for it to work, I had to plug in an extension cord into the thermostat to trick it into thinking the ground was plugged in, then I plugged my heater into the extension cord and it worked.

Overall, I recommend the thermostat.

5Buy this! It makes the room temperature very stable!
By Electric Leaf
I installed 2 of these in bedrooms and plugged in electric heaters. They maintain the room temperature +- 1 degree even though I lower the central heating temperature to save money. Previously I used the thermostats built into Delongi oil filled electric radiators to control the room temperature. The best I could get was maybe +- 3 degrees. The WIN100 completely solved the temperature stability and targeting problems I was having!

The thermocouple and electronic thermostat in the WIN100 is much more accurate than the built in bi-metalic mechanical thermostats in most portable electric heaters. The bi-metalic thermostats had a scale of 1-6 and I had to set each heater to a different number to get the right room temperature. Also I had to bump the set point up and down depending on how cold it was outside. Probably something to do with varying thermal gradient inside the heater housing... anyway, inherent problem when the temperature sensor is next to the heater.
After installing the WIN100, the room temperature was completely stable!
Programming is straight forward. Typical for an electronic thermostat.

Heater set up suggestions:
1) Use oil filled radiator heaters for bedrooms. They are SAFE, QUIET and don't make drafts.
2) Set your heater for medium power, not high. Long, low heat input keeps the room temperature more stable. Lower power reduces the chance of overheating and fire if you have a slightly damaged wall receptacle. (If your receptacle is very warm to the touch, replace it with a new spec grade receptacle.)
3) Place the WIN100 on an outside wall. This is opposite what the user manual says, but it will give you a more stable room temperature. The apparent temperature for a person is a function of the air temperature (conduction & convection heating) and the wall temperature (thermal radiation heating). When it is really cold outside, the walls get colder and you need to bump up the air temperature to keep the room "feeling" the same temperature. Putting the temperature sensor on the cold wall gives you an automatic bump in air temperature as needed.
4) Put the heater away from the WIN100 temperature sensor. Put your hand by the WIN100. If you can feel the heat of the heater, it is too close.
5) Put the heater under a window. That's where most of the cold comes into the room.

5Easy Fix
By Wilson Pupps
If you purchase this to repair your dryer, then you should also look for the thermal cut off part to replace. You need to replace both of these parts to regain heat in the dryer becaue they usually blow up together. When my dryer broke, I googled the problem. I received some good advice which is to replace both of these parts, after checking the outside lint trap for obstructions. That trap was clogged and caused the dryer to overheat blowing the high limit thermostat and thermal cut off. There was other advise about checking the thermal fuse. If your dryer tumbles but does not get hot, then you do not need a new thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse blows, then the dryer will not tumble.

3Didn't have instructions that applied to my situation
By Alan
I had a really basic thermostat that I was replacing. One of the round ones with the mercury switch inside. (Made by Honeywell, I might add). Once removed, just two wires came out of the wall. When you touch the two wires together, the furnace comes on, and when you keep them apart the furnace is off. Couldn't be simpler.

But can you imagine that this thermostat doesn't have instructions for that scenario? I was able to Google instructions eventually, but it is ridiculous that it describes what to do if you have 5 different colored wires but not what to do if you have only two. By the way, what you had to do was remove a jumper and attach your two wires to the CORRECT two posts, which I no longer recall. After that the thermostat works fine, but it was unnecessarily complicated for such a simple use case.

I did end up buying a second one, for the upstairs.

5Works great
By Brian A. Carter
I bought this to replace a White-Rodgers non-programmable thermostat (it looks like this one: http://www.acsuperstore.com/store/WHITER08.html). This product is a fine replacement.

I bought my house with an 80% efficiency gas heater installed (Trane, around 7 years old), but no air conditioning. Around a month ago, I had air conditioning installed (Carrier). The non-programmable thermostat became a bit annoying because it got too hot during the day and too cold at night, depending which direction I changed the temperature.

I took a look at the old White-Rodgers thermostat and had the following connections: white to W, red to RH, a red jumper from RH to RC, blue to C, green to G, and yellow to Y. (A very good reference for what those all mean is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmable_thermostat.)

The Honeywell unit does not have an RH terminal, only an R and an RC. I assume R, RH, and RC are all the same (at least in this situation), but not wanting to start a fire or something, I called the customer support number and was incredibly surprised to find that the person I spoke with was actually able to help me.

Turns out--and please don't blame me if it breaks your system--that red goes to R on the new unit and the jumper between R and RC (there by default) remains in place.

Minor annoyance: the Honeywell *requires* batteries. The White-Rodgers unit operated without batteries (the person I spoke to told me the blue wire, C, supplies power). Since the Honeywell doesn't take a C connection, it must run on batteries. (Hopefully they last a couple of months at least.)

My final connections: white to W, red to R, jumper from R to RC, green to G, and yellow to Y.

One more minor annoyance: you'll need an incredibly tiny flathead screwdriver to tighten the terminal connections. If you have an eyeglass screwdriver or similar (and know where it is), you'll be fine.

Otherwise, I'm very happy with the unit and Honeywell's phone support.

5Great Thermostat - But follow the directions
By John & Lindy
I bought this as a replacement for an older model honeywell programmable thermostat that had batteries that expired that made the unit become temperamental (worked most of the time but the readings on the screen kept indicating batteries needing replacement even though new batteries had been installed). This new thermostat was smaller than the unit it was replacing. The new thermostat had more features. When I first installed this unit the old tags on the wires fell off as I removed each wire from the old thermostat so I could not be certain which wire went into which position on the new one. Being a little flustered by losing the wire tags, I skimmed the directions and dig not pay close attention to where the wires connected with the thermostat. I plugged the wires into the back of the unit instead of on the top of the back of the unit. The front of the unit could not be snapped into place because the wires were where the prongs were supposed to be engaged. The wires were larger in diameter than the prongs, enlarging the holes for the prongs to connect. After moving the wires where they were supposed to go and connecting the faceplate in position I could not get the system to turn on. I was not sure whether the wires were in the wrong position or if the prongs were not making contact. After several adjustments, everything started working. The unit works great and was easy to program. We have used it for both air conditioning and heating. Just take time to mark your wires with the tags provided and follow the directions for how they connect to unit as part of the installation and you will have a great programmable thermostat.

4Works on a pellet stove!
By A. Shepard
We have a Heatilator EcoChoice CAB50 pellet stove in our house, and it came with an old fashioned manual thermostat. It was always buggy, and sometimes you'd get up in the morning and find that it hadn't run all night, because the thermostat never clicked it on, despite it being 50 degrees in the house! :(
So, we bought this for 19.00 and figured, what do we have to lose?
The install was very simple. White wire to white wire slot, red wire to red wire slot that has a jumper (if you have two red wires, you remove the jumper). Attach to the wall, put battery in, cover, and viola... thermostat that works.
The only thing I don't like about this is that it's very sensitive. A change of 2 degrees will make this thing turn on! Very annoying, because alot of times, the stove will be cycling down, and then start right back up again. Why not just let the thing run :( You can fix that by just bumping the heat up so it keeps it on, and then back down. Annoying, but at least it's reliable. It runs. It starts the stove up and turns it off, and I have yet to wake up to a freezing cold house :)
So, overall: Great buy, easy install, needs one battery, easy use, very sensitive. Four stars.

Will update if anything changes.
