5Accurate, Reliable, Controllable via Home Automation, but DON'T PAY for NEXIA
By MJC
Normally, I'd knock it down a couple stars for the monthly fee associated with Nexia, which adds way too much to the cost of the product and makes recovering the cost through schedule based thermostat adjustments highly improbable if not impossible for the average home. But, you can use this otherwise great programmable & Z-Wave compatible thermostat with other home automation systems that don't require monthly fees.

I found this thermostat to be very accurate for both temperature and humidity by comparing it to several Oregon Scientific sensors in our home. That's always important for a thermostat but even more so when you want to use it with a home automation / smart setup. For example, our house is set to "away" mode for a long weekend in the hot and humid summers, the Veralite tells this thermostat to raise the temperature to 80 degrees (or higher). However, it monitors the humidity levels. If the humidity in the house goes above 62%, the veralite will (1) lower the HVAC setting so the AC will lower the humidity, then send me a text message so that I can remotely check the temp and humidity. Once the humidity is under control, the Veralite tells the Trane to raise the temperature to the more miserly level, again. It's a great way to minimize my power bill, but to avoid the risks of mold growth. This TRANE is also linked to several motion sensors in the house, making it like a NEST thermostat that graduated magna cum laude.

Numbers / settings are easy to read. The temperature adjustment buttons are easy to push arrows that anyone can use if they want to walk over and adjust the settings.

As mentioned above, I have this connected to Veralite Z-Wave controller, which Amazon sells at a very good price: Mi Casa Verde VeraLite Home Controller, White and Green The Veralite can control this thermostat along with all the other Z-Wave devices (and Insteon) and does more than Nexia WITHOUT ANY MONTHLY FEES.

2Revceived bad unit, customer service not helpful
By Corey Scott
I'm sure this thermostat works well enough, but mine was DOA - screen freezes immediately after power is connected. Trane informed me that the unit was bad, and that they would send me a replacement unit and a box to ship the old one back in. A week later, neither item ever arrived, and I got a phone call from Trane "following up" on my service request. I said I never got the new unit, and they said, "We don't handle product returns, you need to return it to the merchant to get a new one." I told them that there was no merchant, that I received the product from them to write a review for it. They insisted that they can't send me a new one. I finally gave up and put my old thermostat back in.

1COMPLETE LACK OF ANY CUSTOMER SERVICE
By Bob Condon
We bought the Schlage Link/Nexia System in Sept 2011. We were very happy with the keypad lock and wanted
to be able to program our locks and thermostat online, so we bought new locks, a bridge, and a Trane thermostat.

Now almost 2 years later, the $130 thermostat is malfunctioning. I called Schlage/Nexia and was given a number
to call Trane.

After 30-60 minutes of trying to get tech support or navigate their web site to find tech support, I discovered
that Trane doesn't have tech support. They make you call a local dealer who will no doubt charge you $150-$200
to come out and troubleshoot the thermostat. If I wanted to pay $200 for someone to tell me that I need to push
some buttons to reset it to default (a common solution these days for digital products) or that I need to replace
this $130 product after only 21 months, they could tell me that on the phone.

The end result, I will probably replace this thermostat with another Z wave thermostat from another company.

DON"T BUY TRANE unless you want a complete lack of customer service when something goes wrong.

5Remove Pellet Hopper for (Easier) Intallation
By EGS
I own the Traeger Junior, and I was unhappy with the medium setting on the three position temperature switch (it was too hot, often close to 300 degrees), so I decided to upgrade.

I recommend installing the new controller by removing the hopper:

1. Remove the two screws on the old controller.
2. Remove the pellet hopper (it's only held on by 4 screws). I also removed the 4 screws on the bottom of the hopper to make the final installation easier.
3. Feed the old controller through the front of the hopper. This will allow you to completely remove the pellet hopper and get it out of the way.
4. Install the temperature probe (RTD) per the directions; the diagram isn't great, but it's much better than the written directions.
5. Cut all the the zip ties.
6. To keep from improperly connecting the wires or having to study the wiring diagram, simply disconnect the old wires (pull apart the molex connectors with a slight rocking motion)and reconnect the new wires ONE AT A TIME.
6. At this point your done with the connections. I turned on my Traeger briefly to make sure the fans turned on and the LED illuminated. Make sure there aren't any wires interfering with either fan.
7. I used lots of zip-ties to clean up the installation.
8. Feed the new controller through the hole in the hopper.
9. Attach the hopper
10. Attach the controller
11. Look under the hopper to make sure there aren't any wires interfering with the fan(use more zip-ties if necessary), and install the bottom of the hopper.

5Definitely get this
By Veasna
I am a college student, so I bought the junior Traeger model, which does not come with the digital thermostat kit. After smoking my first set of ribs I went straight to my computer and bought this because controlling the temperature with the 3-speed was quite a pain. Many burger patties and racks of ribs later I am still completely satisfied with my purchase.

Note: This takes a bit of work to install, so unless you are at least somewhat comfortable working with electronics then I would find a friend who is to install it. Still, don't let this deter you from buying it. The kit does not require any soldering to install.

5Installation straight forward. Really enhances your Traeger grill
By gregt590
I concur that Traeger's BAC236 Digital Thermostat Kit really enhances the grill and is well worthwhile. I ordered and received mine directly from Traeger online (www.traegergrills.com), catching one of their $70 sales they periodically have on it.

I should point out that the BAC236 control unit I received looks newer and more featured than the unit shown here on Amazon, containing a separate power on/off switch, and knob settings for a Shut Down Cycle, Smoke, and 9 temperature settings mostly in 25 degree steps from 180 and 225 up through "High" (400 degrees?). Its manual says it is for Models BBQ055, BBQ070, BBQ07E and BBQ075. I ordered and successfully installed it on my model BBQ055 "Junior" grill essentially turning it into a model BBQ155 "Junior Elite".

4Watch out for "Smart Response Setting"
By L. Veal
I had to replace an older cheaper Honeywell that decided it didn't know what time of day it was.

I decided to go with this more expensive model-- but I had reservations after having read some reviews and comments elsewhere where some people complained that the furnace was always on, or they were burning more oil or gas than before. . .

I found the reason--

It's called 'Smart Response Technology'

It's 'ON' by default if you do the quick DIY install.

To turn it 'OFF' you have to download the FULL MANUAL from the Honeywell site to see how to get into the ADVANCED Settings of the device. The pamphlet you get in the package is just your BASIC setup.

I bought the programmable Honeywell to control my oil usage and keep the furnace from heating the house in the dead of the night when everyone is in bed. And I would set the Program to turn the Furnace ON and reset the Temp back to 70 degrees at 7 AM. In short-- The Furnace turns ON at 7 o'clock and in time, (20 minutes or so) the house gets warm.

What SMART RESPONSE does is uses an algorithm to attempt to get the house to the Programmed Temp BEFORE the Programmed Time. The result is the Furnace will turn ON an hour or more BEFORE the time you set to raise the temperature until it hits 70 degrees EXACTLY at 7 AM.

Okay-- it's a nice, cute helpsy idea that I'm sure a Honeywell Programmer/Engineer is rightly proud of. Problem is, the Furnace is BURNING OIL when I don't WANT IT TO.

I didn't notice what the Thermostat was doing until late one night I was watching a movie real late-- when I heard the Furnace go ON and STAY ON at 4:30 in the morning. And I was like: "WTF?" When I went to look at the Thermostat, it displayed: 'In Recovery Mode'

That was the Smart Response circuit attempting to ease the night-time temp back up to 70 degrees in time for 7 AM. Except that meant the thing was BURNING MY OIL AT 4 IN THE MORNING!! If I hadn't been awake, I would never have noticed this.

So disable "Smart Response". That way the Furnace only comes on when YOU program it to.

3Thermostat powered by battery only; can't use system power
By F1 Nut
This is a nicely designed unit, and the instructions are easy to understand and follow. However, the product description is missing an important fact in that this particular model cannot accept a power feed from the system, and therefore REQUIRES the batteries to function. If your home doesn't have a system power feed, this functionality is of course irrelevant; however for those of us with this feature, other thermostats are probably a better buy.

As of January 2011, the following Honeywell and LUX products on Amazon.com have the ability to accept system power:
Honeywell RTH7500D Conventional 7-Day Programmable Thermostat
Honeywell RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat)
Lux Products TX1500E-010 Smart Temp Programmable Thermostat

5Large display and easy to set up
By Busy Buddy
I needed to replace my fifteen year old thermostat for one which was easier to adjust and change settings if needed. I chose Honeywell as they have always gave great life and service. I am using this on a steam heat system only, so I needed to connect only two wires. I did leave the jumper in as directed in the manual. I did power off my heating equipment (very important) we don't want surprises. This thermostat has a large display which can be back-lit simply by quickly pressing one of the control buttons. I only needed to program morning and night settings, you simply skip over the times you don't want to program. When in operation it displays both set temperature and room temperature. I would have to say it is accurate within +/- 1 degree as I compared it with three other thermometers. I installed the batteries before I attached it to the wall base and did all setting and programming ahead of time. The batteries are easy to replace when needed as they fit in a flip out holder from the side, no need to remove any covers or remove the thermostat from it's base.

4reasonably reliable
By Soil Guy
I use this thermostat to turn on and off an attic fan when temperatures get too high. I've found that every few months mine needs to be turned off and reset, or the fan will just run continously. This is no big deal for my purposes, but if you use it for applications where temperature control is critical for keeping animals or plants alive, check it periodically or buy a more expensive unit.

4Accurate and a great value
By DBoz
I recently purchased two of these units to regulate the temperature in my bedroom and my living room. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. The temperature readout is spot on and it's easy to program. However I do have two complaints:

1. The unit can only program weekdays and weekends. That means you can't choose a specific day of the week to program. For example, I am never at my apartment on Saturdays, however since Saturday and Sunday must have the same schedule, as well as monday-friday, I'm wasting energy.

2. In order for this unit to work, there MUST be a ground plugged into the outlet. I bought two "DeLonghi HHP1500 Mica Panel Radiator" heaters (they are amazing, I highly recommend) which don't have a ground. In order for it to work, I had to plug in an extension cord into the thermostat to trick it into thinking the ground was plugged in, then I plugged my heater into the extension cord and it worked.

Overall, I recommend the thermostat.

5Buy this! It makes the room temperature very stable!
By Electric Leaf
I installed 2 of these in bedrooms and plugged in electric heaters. They maintain the room temperature +- 1 degree even though I lower the central heating temperature to save money. Previously I used the thermostats built into Delongi oil filled electric radiators to control the room temperature. The best I could get was maybe +- 3 degrees. The WIN100 completely solved the temperature stability and targeting problems I was having!

The thermocouple and electronic thermostat in the WIN100 is much more accurate than the built in bi-metalic mechanical thermostats in most portable electric heaters. The bi-metalic thermostats had a scale of 1-6 and I had to set each heater to a different number to get the right room temperature. Also I had to bump the set point up and down depending on how cold it was outside. Probably something to do with varying thermal gradient inside the heater housing... anyway, inherent problem when the temperature sensor is next to the heater.
After installing the WIN100, the room temperature was completely stable!
Programming is straight forward. Typical for an electronic thermostat.

Heater set up suggestions:
1) Use oil filled radiator heaters for bedrooms. They are SAFE, QUIET and don't make drafts.
2) Set your heater for medium power, not high. Long, low heat input keeps the room temperature more stable. Lower power reduces the chance of overheating and fire if you have a slightly damaged wall receptacle. (If your receptacle is very warm to the touch, replace it with a new spec grade receptacle.)
3) Place the WIN100 on an outside wall. This is opposite what the user manual says, but it will give you a more stable room temperature. The apparent temperature for a person is a function of the air temperature (conduction & convection heating) and the wall temperature (thermal radiation heating). When it is really cold outside, the walls get colder and you need to bump up the air temperature to keep the room "feeling" the same temperature. Putting the temperature sensor on the cold wall gives you an automatic bump in air temperature as needed.
4) Put the heater away from the WIN100 temperature sensor. Put your hand by the WIN100. If you can feel the heat of the heater, it is too close.
5) Put the heater under a window. That's where most of the cold comes into the room.

5Easy Fix
By Wilson Pupps
If you purchase this to repair your dryer, then you should also look for the thermal cut off part to replace. You need to replace both of these parts to regain heat in the dryer becaue they usually blow up together. When my dryer broke, I googled the problem. I received some good advice which is to replace both of these parts, after checking the outside lint trap for obstructions. That trap was clogged and caused the dryer to overheat blowing the high limit thermostat and thermal cut off. There was other advise about checking the thermal fuse. If your dryer tumbles but does not get hot, then you do not need a new thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse blows, then the dryer will not tumble.

3Didn't have instructions that applied to my situation
By Alan
I had a really basic thermostat that I was replacing. One of the round ones with the mercury switch inside. (Made by Honeywell, I might add). Once removed, just two wires came out of the wall. When you touch the two wires together, the furnace comes on, and when you keep them apart the furnace is off. Couldn't be simpler.

But can you imagine that this thermostat doesn't have instructions for that scenario? I was able to Google instructions eventually, but it is ridiculous that it describes what to do if you have 5 different colored wires but not what to do if you have only two. By the way, what you had to do was remove a jumper and attach your two wires to the CORRECT two posts, which I no longer recall. After that the thermostat works fine, but it was unnecessarily complicated for such a simple use case.

I did end up buying a second one, for the upstairs.

5Works great
By Brian A. Carter
I bought this to replace a White-Rodgers non-programmable thermostat (it looks like this one: http://www.acsuperstore.com/store/WHITER08.html). This product is a fine replacement.

I bought my house with an 80% efficiency gas heater installed (Trane, around 7 years old), but no air conditioning. Around a month ago, I had air conditioning installed (Carrier). The non-programmable thermostat became a bit annoying because it got too hot during the day and too cold at night, depending which direction I changed the temperature.

I took a look at the old White-Rodgers thermostat and had the following connections: white to W, red to RH, a red jumper from RH to RC, blue to C, green to G, and yellow to Y. (A very good reference for what those all mean is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmable_thermostat.)

The Honeywell unit does not have an RH terminal, only an R and an RC. I assume R, RH, and RC are all the same (at least in this situation), but not wanting to start a fire or something, I called the customer support number and was incredibly surprised to find that the person I spoke with was actually able to help me.

Turns out--and please don't blame me if it breaks your system--that red goes to R on the new unit and the jumper between R and RC (there by default) remains in place.

Minor annoyance: the Honeywell *requires* batteries. The White-Rodgers unit operated without batteries (the person I spoke to told me the blue wire, C, supplies power). Since the Honeywell doesn't take a C connection, it must run on batteries. (Hopefully they last a couple of months at least.)

My final connections: white to W, red to R, jumper from R to RC, green to G, and yellow to Y.

One more minor annoyance: you'll need an incredibly tiny flathead screwdriver to tighten the terminal connections. If you have an eyeglass screwdriver or similar (and know where it is), you'll be fine.

Otherwise, I'm very happy with the unit and Honeywell's phone support.

5Great Thermostat - But follow the directions
By John & Lindy
I bought this as a replacement for an older model honeywell programmable thermostat that had batteries that expired that made the unit become temperamental (worked most of the time but the readings on the screen kept indicating batteries needing replacement even though new batteries had been installed). This new thermostat was smaller than the unit it was replacing. The new thermostat had more features. When I first installed this unit the old tags on the wires fell off as I removed each wire from the old thermostat so I could not be certain which wire went into which position on the new one. Being a little flustered by losing the wire tags, I skimmed the directions and dig not pay close attention to where the wires connected with the thermostat. I plugged the wires into the back of the unit instead of on the top of the back of the unit. The front of the unit could not be snapped into place because the wires were where the prongs were supposed to be engaged. The wires were larger in diameter than the prongs, enlarging the holes for the prongs to connect. After moving the wires where they were supposed to go and connecting the faceplate in position I could not get the system to turn on. I was not sure whether the wires were in the wrong position or if the prongs were not making contact. After several adjustments, everything started working. The unit works great and was easy to program. We have used it for both air conditioning and heating. Just take time to mark your wires with the tags provided and follow the directions for how they connect to unit as part of the installation and you will have a great programmable thermostat.

4Works on a pellet stove!
By A. Shepard
We have a Heatilator EcoChoice CAB50 pellet stove in our house, and it came with an old fashioned manual thermostat. It was always buggy, and sometimes you'd get up in the morning and find that it hadn't run all night, because the thermostat never clicked it on, despite it being 50 degrees in the house! :(
So, we bought this for 19.00 and figured, what do we have to lose?
The install was very simple. White wire to white wire slot, red wire to red wire slot that has a jumper (if you have two red wires, you remove the jumper). Attach to the wall, put battery in, cover, and viola... thermostat that works.
The only thing I don't like about this is that it's very sensitive. A change of 2 degrees will make this thing turn on! Very annoying, because alot of times, the stove will be cycling down, and then start right back up again. Why not just let the thing run :( You can fix that by just bumping the heat up so it keeps it on, and then back down. Annoying, but at least it's reliable. It runs. It starts the stove up and turns it off, and I have yet to wake up to a freezing cold house :)
So, overall: Great buy, easy install, needs one battery, easy use, very sensitive. Four stars.

Will update if anything changes.

5Excellent quality, easy-to-use programmable Thermostats
By Melanie
I received my order of 5 Honeywell TL8230A1003 Electric Heat Thermostat Line Voltage Digital 7 day programmable thermostats one week after I placed the order. The units arrived well packaged, are solidly built and are much nicer and smaller than they appear onscreen. I had a licensed electrician install all 5 a week ago, replacing my 25-year-old units. The electrician had never seen this particular thermostat before, but because of the straightforward installation guide coupled with his experience, it only took about 20 minutes to install the first unit, and about 15 for each of the remaining 4. Within minutes I had them all programmed!

The Honeywell TL8230A1003 Electric Heat Thermostat Line Voltage Digital 7 day programmable thermostats are incredibly easy to program, and have icons that correspond to different functions (i.e., comfort mode, night mode, away/vacation, manual, etc.). I consider myself to be very "tech-savvy" and don't like to read manuals if I don't have to. With this product, I was able to figure out how to use every function, with minimal time, and without having to study the instructions (which, by the way, is just a front-to-back insert). Further, because they are connected to the heating unit power supply, there are no batteries to change. The only down side to this is that in the event of a power outage, I believe all the programming will need to re-done. Still, it's a minor inconvenience.

The most wonderful thing about these thermostats is the ability to program 4 different times for each day of the week. Though they come pre-programmed, re-programming is completely customizable. For example, for Monday and Tuesday, I can set the three downstairs units to come on at 5AM, go off just before I leave home, come on again an hour before I return and go off again an hour after I go to bed. I set the living room and dining room units to only come on in the evening. For Saturday, I program a totally different set of times, and on Sunday, yet another set of times. The thermostat also has an "On/Off" switch that allows me to turn them off if I don't want the timed setting(s) to come on, as well as a "manual" function that allows me to completely override the programmed setting and increase or decrease the desired temperature. The thermostat is also EXTREMELY QUIET when switching on and off in timed modes, and has a backlighting feature accessible by a long bar-type button on the face of the unit - perfect for checking temps in the dark. Each of the setting buttons is made of non-slip rubber so fingers won't accidentally slide off during programming. The buttons are small, though, and there is no backlighting for the buttons. The only caveat is to be careful not to press the "clear" button unless you actually WANT to clear a setting. This button is not in a separate area of the unit, and I inadvertently cleared one of the programmed times.

All in all, I am very satisfied with this product. What a great feeling to wake up in the morning or come home in the evening to a warm home! And the cost savings as a result of being able to use heat only when and where I need it are sure to be another benefit. I'm so pleased with these new thermostats that I've recommended them to two of my neighbors/friends, and I expect that they will purchase new sets within the next couple of weeks!

To summarize,

Pros:

Small and sleek

Easy and quick to install by licensed technician

Easy-to-understand icons

Nice "green-glow" backlight

Fully customizable programming - up to 4 time settings for each day of the week

Programming buttons have non-slip surfaces

On/Off switch

Extremely quiet

No batteries to replace - ever!

Cons:

No battery backup

Programming buttons are small and not backlit

"Clear" button is not in separate area of the unit

5Technology imported from the Frozen North
By M. J. Mccaffrey
Honeywell purchased Aube, a Canadian manufacturer of thermostats and heating/cooling products, several years ago. This thermostat is a rebranded and upgraded version of one of Aube's products.

I purchased seven of them when we moved into our home in 2003. The installation was truly easy, and I found the programming intuitive. There are some shortcuts built into the programming: for example, if you want the heat to come up at the same time every morning, hold down the "DAY" button and after a few moments you will see all seven days indicated on the screen. Individual alterations per day can be made afterward.

The "adaptive start time" feature means that the thermostat records how long it took to reach its setpoint--if it failed to reach it by the programmed time it starts a little earlier the next time. If it overshot, it will start a little later next time. That makes your living space comfortable at the times you use it, and in practice we just expect the room will be heated when we enter it.

REVISION: It was called to my attention that this thermostat does not drop voltage to the heater in any way. I have revised this paragraph to reflect what I learned from Aube-Honeywell technical support:

The feature that really saves energy is "Proportional Integral Adaptive" control (or "PIA"). Old thermo-couple thermometers are either "on" or "off." Even with various mechanical controls built in, they can't keep the room any closer than 2 degrees warmer or cooler than the temperature you set. This thermostat, by contrast, can "throttle back" the energy going to the baseboard as it approaches the setpoint. It does so by energizing the heater for fractions of a 15 minute interval, rather than simply running until the setpoint is reached. In practical terms, your electric meter spins less often, and the room eases in to the temperature you wanted. A minor drop in temperature results in a "nudge" from the thermostat rather than a full-blast energy assault that's guaranteed to go past the setpoint again.

This thermostat adds on-demand backlighting, which we would have wanted, but otherwise appears identical to the old "TH" model that we have. We've saved (and I've counted) several thousand dollars since we installed these, and I recommend them highly.

3Disappointing Programmable Line Thermostat
By John Fitzgerald
I bought Honeywell thinking they are the best. The unit works fine, but the programming suffers. This has four programmble times per day (good) but only two practical temperature settings (bad). Once set, the two temp settings exist for all occurrences of that setting. For example, say the "economy" temp setting is 65. You might want it 64 during mid-day M-F ("away"), 66 for the same mid-day hours on weekends, and 62 at night. Can't do it; you're stuck with the one setting for every occurrence of "economy" which is typically mid-day and night. You want maximum control to make electric heat as cost-efficient as possible. This unit isn't as robust as my previous Honeywell CT1950 which caught fire. So far, Honeywell isn't scoring big points. Problem is there are not many choices for line thermostats.

5Lux Products 1500E Thermostat
By G. P. Stern
Lux Products TX1500E Smart Temp Programmable Thermostat

After researching thermostats, I replaced my builder-grade 1 week thermostats with a couple of Lux 1500E units. This was one of Consumer Reports' best buy models from last year (the other also a Lux). Additionally, I liked Lux's programming dial which simplifies programming; with the dial, there are fewer arcane button press combinations to deal with. Installation was simple and straightforward. The display on the 1500E is fairly large and has an electroluminescent back light that's activated by pressing any button. I'm farsighted but can read the display without my glasses. The 1500E is a 5-1-1 thermostat but also includes a "special" schedule that can used for vacation or holiday making this a 5-1-1-1 thermostat.

I found programming to be quick and simple and the unit works as advertised. I have one complaint and one quirk to mention. The complaint: The operating instructions aren't the best. In particular, there is precious little explanation of the "swing" function or what the swing numbers actually mean. I sent an email to Lux and received a phone call the next day with a thorough explanation. Fantastic customer service!! For the record, the swing setting numbers correlate to quarter degrees (the instructions should state this but don't). The default setting is 1 meaning the thermostat will cycle when the temperature deviates .25 degrees. Keeps the house temperature constant but heat or AC will constantly cycle. Setting the swing to 4 will cause heat or AC to turn on when temperature deviates 1 degree (4 X .25) from the set temperature. You can set the swing up to a value of 9 (2.25 degrees). Here's the quirk part: with my old thermostat, if I set the temperature to 69, the heat would turn on when the displayed temperature dropped to 68 and turn off when the displayed temperature rose to 70. The 1500E, with a swing setting of 4, doesn't work quite the same way. Even though displayed temp is 68, heat won't come on right away. It's almost as if the thermometer controlling the display isn't the same one controlling the thermostat itself. Either that, or a swing setting of 4 is working differently than I'm expecting. Please note, I do not find this a problem with the 1500E, just a little odd. Also note: most instructions accompanying thermostats are lacking.

Overall, I am very pleased with the Lux 1500E. It feels well built, has a nice display, and a competitive price. Add Lux's great customer support, and I'd highly recommend it.

3Needs calibration to ensure temp accuracy
By slinkywizard
I ordered three Lux TX1500E thermostats. Before installing I tested them for accuracy by placing all three Lux thermostats side by side, and comparing the temperature and humidity readings with two additional thermostats and hygrometers I know to be accurate.

All three Lux units displayed different temperatures from each other. One of the three units was accurate. The temperature is easy to calibrate by setting the dial to run mode, and while holding the up button, pressing the down button once. A screen pops up allowing the temp to be set plus or minus five degrees. In this case the temperature on one of the units was 2 degrees high, so I entered -2 on the calibration, and since calibrating the temperature readings have been accurate.

The humidity readings for all three units were initially off by up to 7 percentage points. The unit allows for calibration up to +/- 15 percentage points by setting the dial to run, pressing the H button, and while holding down the up button, pressing the down button once. After calibrating the units, they are still off by a couple percent, and occasionally display a ridiculous reading like 95% relative humidity (RH) when the actual RH is 50-60%, but for the most part the RH is close enough.

The humidity reading on the unit does not display automatically. The "H" button must be pushed to display relative humidity. To clarify, the thermostat runs off temperature only, i.e. there isn't an option to run the air conditioner until the relative humidity reaches a certain level.

The display on the unit is puzzling. On the left the time is displayed prominently, and in a much smaller font the temperature displays on the right. A more helpful display would be: Actual temp, Set temp, and actual humidity all in large lettering, and then the time somewhere off in a corner.

The reason I bought a programmable thermostat is for the swing function. My old thermostat would constantly cycle the a/c (on for only 5 minutes at a time) because it was turning on the unit when the temp hit 79.25 degrees and turning it off when it hit 78.75. This 1) damages the a/c equipment, and 2) does not allow the a/c units to run long enough for effective dehumidification to occur, since the a/c doesn't really start to dehumidify effectively until it has been on for at least 10-15 minutes. Without proper dehumidification, the house feels warmer than it is (i.e. it's not the heat, it's the humidity).

This Lux thermostat has a default swing function of 1, which means that if you set the thermostat on 79, it will turn on the a/c at 79.25 and turn it off at 78.75 degrees. The swing function can be set between 1 and 9. Using a 79 degree setting, a swing value of 4 means the a/c will turn on at 80 degrees and turn off at 78 degrees. A swing value of 8 means the a/c will turn on at 81 degrees and turn off at 77 degrees. I don't understand why the default swing is at 1 (i.e. .25 degrees). A setting of at least 4 (i.e. 1 degree) seems prudent for the health of the a/c equipment and humidity control.

Moving on, I purchased this Lux unit instead of a Honeywell because 1) Consumer Reports gave the highest rating of all tested thermostats to the Lux TX1500E, which rated much higher than the Honeywell units, 2) These are $40 vs. over $100 for the Honeywell units, and 3)I called tech support for both Honeywell and Lux. Honeywell routes you to an overseas call center staffed by people who barely speak English. Lux has a call back system, but they called back within two hours, and the guy I spoke with was intelligent and located in the U.S.

Before purchasing I also considered the Lux TX9000TS, which is a touch screen thermostat that received Consumer Reports' second highest rating, right behind this unit. I purchased the TX1500E instead because 1) better pricing, 2) I read the 1-star reviews on Amazon for both products, and the TX9000TS seemed to have more problems than the TX1500E, and 3) The manual dial/arrow key set on the TX1500E is more intuitive for me to navigate than a touch screen.

I found programming the thermostat to be easy, although a little tedious, as the program settings must be entered 4 times (once for weekdays, once for Saturday, once for Sunday, and last for Special Programs).

One feature I'm not thrilled with is the fan setting. The fan can be set on "auto", meaning it runs only when the a/c or furnace runs. The other fan setting is "on" meaning it runs continuously (potentially causing some major humidity problems during the cooling season in a hot/humid climate). What I would like to have seen is a "circulate" option for the fan, meaning if the a/c or furnace hasn't kicked on in the past 30 minutes, the fan will circulate the air for 5-10 minutes in order to improve indoor air quality.

With a fan setting of "on", let's say the a/c has run for 20 minutes and the a/c coil now has water dripping off it. If the fan keeps running without a/c, much of that condensed water on the coil is going to re-evaporate into the air that the fan is blowing over it, which will raise humidity, partially defeating one of the two functions of air conditioning (lower temp and lower humidity). At least this is what happens in humid climates such as Houston where I'm located. A "circulate" function on the thermostat would avoid this problem.

5Does just what it's supposed to do.
By Frank G. Costley Jr.
Replaced a Hunter thermostat which drove us crazy because it did what it wanted to do rather than what I wanted it to do. It was difficult to program and unecessarily complicated compared to the LUX. The LUX was easy to install and hasn't missed a beat since I put it in. Consumer Reports rated it a best buy.

5Simple, Accurate & Inexpensive
By Steve Young
I had this installed in a matter of minutes after receiving it. It comes pre-programed but the times and temps were not to my liking so I programed it and had it drop the two middle times so mine just has wake and sleep. Programing literally could not be easier. I don't know why there are so many reviewers having trouble with the light-up display, mine is very bright. Simply press the temp up or down button momentarily and the backlight comes on and this does not raise or lower the temp, you would have to touch the temp button again to make a change. The unit looks good too, much better than the Robertshaw from 1988 that it replaced. The unit really does keep the temperature right where you set it too but this may not be such a good thing. The Robertshaw unit was set for 77 degrees and would not come on until the temp reached 78. It would lower the temp to 76 then shut the A/C off. The Honeywell unit is also set for 77 degrees but instead of a 2 degree spread it has a +/- 1 degree accuracy which means you never see it move off of 77 degrees. The problem is that while it keeps the temp right where you want it, it makes your equipment work twice as hard to maintain this kind of accuracy. I've been working in my office right next to the A/C closet ever since I installed it several hours ago and have been keeping a log of start/stop times just to see how it's doing and on average the A/C has been running 8 minutes and resting for 12 minutes all day. This is much more than the Robertshaw unit that had less accuracy and I really don't notice the difference. The problem is that all this extra stopping and starting can't be good for the equipment and I would imagine that it will use more electricity, once the blower motor is up to speed it doesn't take much to keep it going but you can see the lights dim when it starts so you know all those extra starts are using more "juice". I still like this thermostat though, and have given it 5 stars. I just wish Honeywell would have put one more code entry screen in the programing of this unit that would allow the user to put more of a spread between the on and off temps to save wear and tear on the equipment.

2No auto changeover from heat to cool.
By Daniel Miller
The packaging and website both claim that the 6350D has auto changeover from heating to cooling. However, that is NOT the case. If you need this feature, buy the 6450 instead. On my second call to their support 800 number the representative informed me of this and offered a trade in by mail. My other little gripe which required my first call to them, is that although installation was quick, their diagrams did not include one that matched my wiring. The good thing is that they were knowledgeable and quick, and their phone menu system didn't take all day to navigate through.

5I like it!
By Steve
To address Mr. Dave's concern about the battery...

I've been using battery powered thermostats for over 15 years and my experience has been that the batteries will last for years. This is my first Honeywell so I can't comment on the exact amount of time the battery will last, but if you change the battery once every year as suggested in the instructions, you will never have a problem. Also, two months prior to battery depletion, this unit will flash a warning to replace the battery. However, I agree with Dave that a hard wired (power) system is better from a safety perspective. Honeywell sells models that do that too. Still, there is also the possibility that the furnace could fail while you're away and there are (freeze alarm dialers)devices that can call you in your winter home and inform you about that condition.

I also agree with Dave about the length of time the back light stays lit.

Other than that, I really like the unit. It's simple to program and use, and the display is very easy to see. Also, it doesn't overshoot the temperature like some other units I have used.

I highly recommend this thermostat.

5Vacation Hold Feature - Worth Considering
By Camera Shy
I have both the Honeywell RTH7600D (bought at Costco for around $65 and packaged there as model RCT8101A) and this Honeywell RTH8500D. Both units are very good with the one major difference being the "Vacation Hold" feature; the 8500 has it and the 7600/Costco version does not. The programming interface is different as well, however, one is not necessarily better than the other. The 7600 unit is a little easier to program whereas the 8500 offers a shortcut that allows multiple days to be programmed at once. Since you'll likely program the unit infrequently, I don't think this should necessarily be a consideration unless you are an installer of these units where time is money; then the 8500 is the unit of choice.

The Costco version for me is going back because it lacks the Vacation Hold feature. If you travel or not at home frequently, the Vacation Hold feature allows you to hold the temperature, say, at 50 degrees for 10 days while you take off for a ski trip. With this feature, once the timed Vacation Hold is over, the thermostat resumes it's normal programming schedule. So, when you arrive home, the house temperature is at a comfortable level.

The Costco version allows you to manually override the program schedule, however, you must manually remove the override as well. Therefore, when you arrive home from your ski trip, you come home to a cold house and you'll need to manually reset the thermostat and wait for the house to warm up. If this is not an important feature for you or you're are at home most of the time, go for the Costco version and save about $40.

Otherwise, the RTH8500D is an excellent unit that has worked quite well for me over the past several years.

UPDATE: We recently (May 2011) installed the RTH8500D in our bedroom. The "click" of the relay contact when the thermostat calls for activation annoys my wife who has rather sensitive hearing. I contacted Honeywell and they said the clicking sound is unavoidable at the current time and suggested insulating the back plate of the RTH8500D with 1/8" Styrofoam to deaden the relay sound. I temporarily tried a thick folded piece of clothing material and I didn't notice any difference. After reading other Honeywell thermostat reviews, the clicking sound seems to be universal across many of their thermostats. So, if considering a bedroom application, you may want test the unit to ensure it's within an acceptable noise level .

5Works even on older/non-standard units.
By Starboard Home
I had trouble finding programable thermostats that would control my split system Carrier heat pump. Honeywell has the installation manuals for every one of their units online ([...] I spent time looking at this unit's documentation to be sure it could handle my Carrier unit. Be careful, many Honeywell and other manufacturers have units that don't handle heat pumps, and some include "call a professional" in their instructions. Setup was a cinch and the ability to program temps for four times per day for up to seven days will save me money throughout the year. It's a simple unit, seems compatible with most systems, has some neat features like "vacation hold" where you can override all the programming and set a temperature to "hold" until you reset it for programming. You could be away for an evening or a month...it would honor the "hold" setting.

There are a couple of "if this...then that" instructions, but they're really well put. I did notice a poor rating on one of Honeywell's other thermostats because one purchaser didn't realize the difference between possibilities linked with "AND" vs. "OR". "And" means EACH MUST EXIST, "Or" means ONLY ONE OF THEM SHOULD EXIST. So, although the instructions are excellent, they must be read carefully before using the unit on a more complex system, such as a heat pump.

Only thing I'm not too happy about is the very short time the backlight stays on...barely five seconds. Unfortunately, in my house, the unit is mounted in an area with little natural or ambient light. I'm sure once the screen is totally familiar to me this won't matter much. But, learning the system and setting the various "System settings" takes reading along with the Installation Guide and the screen is constantly going black. Maybe I just haven't found the setting that lets it stay on longer...

I'm not experienced with HVAC. I'm a 62 year old woman/avid home "improver" and installing this in place of the 25 year old mechanical mercury stat was very easy...maybe 30 minutes.

5Accurate, with every option and more
By W. Price
I wanted a touchscreen thermostat that accepted power from the furnace system so I didn't need to replace batteries every year. (It will run off of batteries if your system does not provide 24vac power to the thermostat; many were not originally installed to do so.)

This model has practically every feature you could want in a standard thermostat. It's easy to install with a bit of careful reading and looks great on the wall. I like that you can set a temperature range (disabled by default; must set an advanced option to enable) and the unit will automatically switch between heat and cool to maintain the set range.

Each of the 7 days of the week is individually programmable with up to 4 events (wake, leave, return, sleep). It offers advanced hold modes: 1) hold override temperature until next program event; 2) hold override permanently until canceled; 3) "vacation hold" for a number of days before automatically resuming the normal program.

Another advanced feature is the "recovery" mode, where the unit learns how long it takes to heat/cool the living space and it can turn on the heater or air conditioner early so that it reaches the set temperature at the set time. Cheaper thermostats only turn on *at* the set time and then the temperature has to catch up to the program. This unit can anticipate your needs, so if you want it to be 75 degrees when you wake up at 7:35, set the wake-up event to 75 degrees at 7:35. It takes care of the rest.

Highly recommended! I have three of these in my home, one for each zone.

3Be careful with Dimensions
By jules
I purchased this and does not fit even though I checked the dimesions. The dimensions are for the outside of the case and do not account for almost 1 inch on each side for the inner guard. Make sure to deduct almost 2" in your dimensions if you want to fit.

4Works fairly well - needed modification for additional ventilation
By Ashok Aiyar
I bought this thermostat guard to cover our Honeywell RTH7500D Thermostat. It's very easy to install and fits the Thermostat perfectly. After installation, we noticed that the thermostat didn't detect changes in temperature very effectively, and therefore didn't turn on and off as expected.

For example, in the heating cycle, our thermostat was set to 70 degrees, and when covered by the thermostat guard would continue to detect a temperature of 70 degrees even when the room temperature dropped to 65 degrees.

Thinking this might result from insufficient air circulation around the thermostat, I cut one inch diameter holes in the thermostat guard - 2 in each side, 3 in top, and 2 in the bottom. With these additional "ventilation" holes, the thermostat turns on and off as it did before I put the guard on.

I've uploaded an image of the thermostat guard as installed with the holes cut in it. It is very difficult to fiddle with the thermostat settings through the holes, so cutting the holes hasn't affected the function of the thermostat guard.

So, if your thermostat doesn't work as expected after installing a thermostat guard, you can improve the situation by cutting a few holes in the guard - the acrylic/Lexan is thick enough to be cut without cracking.

1Has a tremendous amount of potential, but can't recommend in current state
By cd2000
I'm an HVAC technician who's installed and troubleshooted this product in customer's homes for the past couple years and experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let's start with the good.

Pros:

-It looks great. Personally I don't really care what my thermostat looks like but I know that is very important to many people and the Nest is unmatched in this area.

-When it works, it is hands down the easiest thermostat to install. The ability to sense wires and automatically configure the thermostat is a cool feature you don't see too often. They have a nifty wizard on their website that where you check the wires you have and it figures out what type of system you have and whether or not it will be compatible. Not that I really care, since this is what I do for a living, but for DIYers who have never done something like this before, it's nice.

-In theory, it can control quite a wide range of HVAC systems, including 4 stages of heating, 2 stages of cooling, dual fuel systems, and humidification/dehumidification.

-The customer service reps do genuinely seem to want to help, and there have been cases of them giving refunds even outside of the return period, or paying for visits by HVAC contractors to troubleshoot issues or repair damage caused by the thermostat.

-The auto away and auto learning seem to work as advertised for the most part and IF, a big IF, you didn't program your previous thermostat, they will save you energy. However your money would be put to much better use by spending 10 minutes reading the manual of your traditional thermostat and programming it (even if its unintuitive, it's not something you have to do often). Then, take that $250 and put it towards something that will REALLY save energy, such as tightening up your house.

-It has energy reporting which the Honeywell wifi thermostats lack (although the Honeywells are better thermostats in every other regard)

Cons:

-Reliability has been less than satisfactory. Instead of using good old reliable relays like most thermostats Nest decided to use what they call FETs (Field Effect Transistors) to control the equipment. They probably did this so they could give the thermostat its small form factor. Unfortunately, they aren't so reliable and tend to fail in the on position. The Y terminal (compressor) seems to fail pretty frequently causing A/C to run in the winter, sometimes at the same time as the heat. Some people do not have this issue, but for those that do, it seems to happen again and again no matter how many new baseplates Nest sends out. IMO it doesn't matter how many people don't have issues, the technology is plain unreliable and they need to stop using it. Besides the FET issue, software updates are pushed to the thermostat and the user has no choice on whether or not to accept them. Sometimes, they have bugs. The most recent one, 4.0, which the only purpose of was to add support for the Nest Protect, caused issues with some thermostats unable to power themselves. Some Nest owners found their thermostats unable to connect to wifi. Others found their pipes frozen as the Nest failed to turn on their equipment. Again, not everyone had an issue. But a thermostat is not an iPod. A buggy update is going to cause a much bigger problem than being without your music if you are part of the group that does have problems. They need to stop forcing updates on people (have a way to apply them at will) and test them extensively on their own systems before release.

-It's a power stealing thermostat. One big issue when you upgrade to any wifi thermostat is how to power it. To understand this issue, I will give a brief history of thermostats. Back in the old days, we had simple mercury thermostats. No need to power them at all! But then along came digital programmable thermostats. They needed power for their displays, memory, and possibly a backlight. The most common HVAC system in US consists of a basic single stage gas furnace, matched with a single speed central air conditioner. To control this setup, you need four wires in your wall going to your thermostat. This worked fine for old mercury thermostats. To actually enable the thermostat to power itself, though, you need a 5th "common" wire. But, most people only had 4 wires going to their thermostat location. Programmable thermostat manufacturers came up with two solutions to this. The most common solution was to make the thermostats battery powered. These were simple enough to install and worked fine, the only con was that you had to replace the batteries periodically. Another solution was called a "power stealing" thermostat. This thermostat robbed enough current from the HVAC control wires to power itself, but NOT enough to trigger the HVAC system. On older HVAC systems that just ran off relays, this worked fine. Fast-forward to the age of wifi thermostats. How to power these things? AA Batteries wouldn't work, because the wifi drew too much power. What MOST wifi thermostat manufacturers decided to do was FORCE customers to run a common wire to power the thermostat. Nest was not satisfied with this as they wanted to make their thermostat easy to DIY install, so they decided to implement power stealing. Nowadays, though, most HVAC systems run off control boards, which are often sensitive to attempts by a thermostat to rob power for itself and may not let it at all. So sadly, the Nest actually works better with old standing pilot furnaces than newer efficient ones, even though it is a thermostat that promotes efficiency. Huh? Luckily, Nest gives you the option to connect a common wire if you have one, so you don't need to rely on the power stealing. Unfortunately, this issue has just led to too many problems and too much confusion by consumers who thought that Nest would work with their system and then found they needed a common wire. For more on this, see a great blog post on their competitor Ecobee's site (a product which, by the way, I highly recommend): [...]. As you can see, not everyone will experience issues, but enough will that it is not OK to assume it will just work, and also it is possible for problems to occur even if it has been working for a long time due to changes in weather and battery capacity.

-"Heat Pump Balance" DOES NOT work as advertised and not only will it not save energy, it will use MORE by running backup aux heat way too much. You can turn that off and set your own lockout temperature for aux heat, but the minimum is only 35 degrees. Most modern heat pump systems can hold their own own down into the 20s. THIS IS A REALLY BAD BUG, IT AFFECTS ALL HEAT PUMP USERS. BE WARNED!

-It doesn't run multistage systems properly. If the Nest detects 1st stage is not keeping up, it will kick into 2nd stage. Fine, most thermostats do this. But then, instead of dropping back into 1st stage, it will stay in 2nd until it shuts off, decreasing comfort and efficiency. Finally, when recovering from a setback, it will ONLY use 1st stage, which takes way too long and makes it difficult to recover in time.

-Technical support isn't so great. Lately there have been ridiculously long hold times, and they don't seem to know what they're talking about. They are polite and professional, though, and I don't blame this problem on the agents, I blame it on the fact they aren't trained properly, which has to do with the next con...

-The overall attitude of the company. They do not communicate with their customers adequately to alert them of updates or problems. There is a community forum on their website that is quite helpful, and I highly recommend you visit it before purchasing. There used to be Nest moderators there, but they have all but abandoned it. There are many Nest users there though who put a lot of time into helping people solve problems and giving advice on how to best use Nest products. There are many complaints there, but they aren't "bashing" the products. Instead they give constructive criticism to Nest on where to improve, and ask for basic updates on what Nest is doing and whether they will fix these numerous issues. Unfortunately, instead of responding to the community members, they decided to make it un-indexable by search engines so prospective customers would NOT see this information. You can see for yourself. Go to [...] and view the source code of the page. You'll see . You can click "recent discussions" to see what people have been posting and feel free to create an account and ask any questions you may have.

-No adjustable temp swing or cycles per hour (other than selecting between radiant and forced air heat)

-Can't adjust % RH setpoint for humidifier automatically based on outdoor temperature

-Their implementation of emergency heat for heat pumps doesn't work well with the majority of systems installed (see the comments thread for more detail).

-The energy reporting is kind of lame. It pales in comparison to Ecobee. Not enough cold, hard, data and too many meaningless statistic like "leaves".

-No hold mode. Really guys, $20 programmable thermostats have this.

Conclusion: Would I recommend this product? Not currently I wouldn't. If you have a heat pump or multistage system, I absolutely would not recommend it. If you have your heart set on this thermostat and have a basic single stage system, be prepared that it may not work without a common wire, and be prepared for the possible reliability issues. Watch it closely after you install and be ready to return it within the 30 day period if necessary. And really, not even considering the reliability issues, is it worth it? I'm not convinced.

UPDATE 1/13/14: Nest has released a new version of their software, version 4.0.1, which claims to have all the new features of 4.0 but the performance of 3.5.3. The jury's still out on whether it does what they say it will: some people are reporting different issues they didn't have before, others say it fixed their issues. The good news, though, is that there is now a moderator on the Nest community, Brian, who is answering people's questions and helping them get the updates they need. While they still have a long way to go, it is good to see them moving in the right direction. Also, for those who don't know: Google owns Nest now. Make of that what you will, I won't comment on the privacy since everyone has a different opinion on that, but I am optimistic that the Google acquisition will accelerate the development of the product.

UPDATE 1/14/14: Nest's community forum is now indexable by search engines, including Google. Hmm... coincidence? I think not. I am feeling good about this transaction.

UPDATED 1/17/14: Added some pros and cons.

1We REALLY tried to like this product...
By John Knoch
I purchased 2 Nest 2nd generation thermostats from the company store this summer. I am an engineer who in the electronics industry. I am tech savvy, build computers, troubleshoot networks, and fix most everything around the house myself.

I liked the look and concept of this product. A thermostat that programs itself, looks great, is easy to operate, and links directly to my multiple iPads and iPhones. There is even a plugin that makes it integrate with my MiCasa Vera home automation controller. It seemed like the perfect fit for our high tech AZ home. I love technology and understand that new products have growing pains, I usually only write positive tech reviews, but enough is enough...

The decision: We had two old tan box thermostats on our walls. They were programmable, but barely so. When our electric bill hit $500 over last summer enough was enough. We invested in two nest thermostats.

The installation: I installed the thermostats myself. I had a few questions so I took a picture of my wires and emailed it to nest. Installation support was good. I was able to get them running within about an hour. There was a minor issue with changing the o to b on one of my systems to get it to cool instead of heat. In AZ in August this is important...

First sign of trouble... I came home from work a few days after installation and on the main house system the fan was blowing but no cooling was on even though the thermostat was displaying blue indicating cooling demand. I turned the thermostat on and off and this resolved the issue. Concerned, I called tech support and the advised me to reaload the software. Really? Ok... Whatever. I did this and a few weeks later the issue happened again. Does not seem like it was ever resolved.

More trouble... Woke up @ 3am to 85 degrees on our bedroom system. Bedroom nest was off with green flashing light. After trying multiple resets I was able to get cooling working so I could get some sleep. This worked ok for a day or so, but I noticed that the fan wire was no longer registering power. Soon afterwards my system was stuck in heat! In AZ! In August! I called a technician to come out. First guy was not familiar with nest so needed to get another guy the following day. Next guy installed a relay to isolate the fan wire from the logic board and a jumper to reverse the polarity of the reversing signal. Troubleshooting indicated a bad o/b terminal. Called nest support and after 30 minutes on the phone they sent me a new back plate. This arrived after a couple days I installed it, removed the jumper, and the system was fine. Total extra cost $250 for troubleshooting and 4 hours of my time.

Wifi issues... I have a fairly standard network with two apple airport base stations. One is bridged to the other so they operate like a single unit. My bedroom nest would now drop connection every 10 minutes or so. Very frustrating. I tried many things to fix and spent hours on the phone with support. Finally the issue stopped. None of my other wifi devices have trouble like this. They just work. Still not sure why this happened or what fixed it.

More issues... Now back to the main house system. Woke up and living room was warm. Fan blowing, ac off. Service found bad capacitor and replaced but fan still blowing continuously. Traced issue to bad g terminal on nest base station. After 45 minutes on the phone with tech support (even though I told them the diagnosis from the start) they agreed to send out another base plate. Fan still running continuously... Checked tracking and base station was shipped ups ground! Why would they do that? Called back and after another 30 minutes on the phone they sent another base plate overnight. This one arrived today and fixed the issue. Now we are 2 for 2 on bad base plates within the 1st 3 months!!!! Another 4 hours and $150 spent on troubleshooting.

More wifi trouble... Now the living room nest is having wifi trouble like the first one. Tried a bunch of initial troubleshooting and resetting procedures with no luck. Very frustrated... Dread calling support and going through their standard questions when I already know there is no issue with my equipment... Just shoot me...

All in all, this could be a great product, but implementation is poor, and there are problems with the base plate circuitry. I have read other similar posts and it is not clear if the issues are resolved. With regards to wifi this is very frustrating and ridiculous. Wifi should just work. I have top of the line routers and great signal throughout. Why all the issues?? With regards to service, I wish that if there was trouble they would dispatch an expert to my house for repair. The best I seem to get is technicians with marginal knowledge of the product who ask me to deal with nest because they do not have the time to talk to support. Then, I need to pay them for their trouble while I wait for nest to send parts that I need to install. Why do the technicians not have base plates already available given all the issues people are having?

I still have my thermostats, but 2 base plates, several hundred extra dollars, and multiple hours later I am far from excited about my thermostats. Instead, I wonder when the next troubleshooting session will start and what will happen next. With their Apple roots I would have expected that the founders would strive to make a product that "just works". Unfortunately, for whatever reasons exist, that seems not to be the case.

UPDATE 10/31/13

Based on a hunch and some research I was able to fix the wifi problem myself by adding a common wire. Both units are now working. It seems that for compatibility reasons these thermostats bleed power from the control wires in an attempt to not require a common, which not everyone has, but my experience is that a common is necessary to supply power for the wifi / display / etc... If the thermostat senses low power it appears to disable wifi first, which explains why it cuts in and out.

I did notice that a Nest representative commented on my review which is nice and shows that they do care about how they are perceived. However, I never received any follow up.

UPDATE 11/20/13

Nest did finally contact me a few weeks ago. Since everything is working now there was not too much to talk about. I told them that my expectation is that there should be no more issues and asked if I had the latest and greatest backplate revisions and if it would be worthwhile to send someone out to perform some diagnostics. They said I was up to date and this would not be necessary. They did ask me for my repair invoices and I sent them in. Have not heard back and not sure if anything will come of it.

UPDATE 12/1/13

We had another wifi dropping issue. This time I noticed that both Nest thermostats were using or trying to use the same ip. So, I made them static using the MAC address and the issue went away. Still nothing from Nest on my invoices.

52nd gen problems solved
By mtnac
As a certified licensed HVAC contractor for 32 years and Certified Nest Reseller in Scottsdale Arizona I have personally re-installed and troubleshot over 50 of the Nest thermostats. We like the Nest and it's concept though we have been experiencing multiple problems with regards to error messages, units operating erratic, systems switching from ac to heat, compressors cycling into internal overload, burnt up control boards and relays to name a few. I do admit it's great for business, though once we show up for service, we now own the call and are responsible for making the system work. The newest problem was this last week on a commercial building with 4 new AC units on the roof and 4 new Nests. We have logged in 6 additional non chargeable hours to troubleshoot and replacements in a 1hr job to change out all 4.
To keep it short, these are the facts;
*Installed 4 nests, all AC units are same brand, 2 Nests are functioning
*Nest #1, installed, ran for 1 day went into heat, troubleshot replaced control cable and determined bad base, replaced with new from supplier. Installed new Nest, ran 3 cycles, began chattering compressor contactor relay (shorted from 26v to 16v) and compressor went off on overload. Replace Nest with conventional thermostat, unit is now operational for last 2 days.
*Nest #2, customer wanted nest in his office, shut off system power, removed Nest head, relocated line in office, reinstalled base and applied power to system, Nest displayed error message on G terminal as no power and system had no fan, removed head metered lines and jumped fan circuit and fan came on. Replaced Nest with conventional thermostat, unit is operational.
*I called the Nest Tech support and was informed that there is a problem with the "FET" (field effect transistor) inside of the base that they are having problems with. Talked with commercial support for 45 minutes, there was nothing they could help with that we have already done.

11-6-2013 UPDATE
Been working with the Nest folks regarding the issues associated with the sub bases and the 2nd generation Nest. We have found that the upgrade to 3.5.1 has been successful! The installations have gone well with the last 6 Nests that we have installed. We suggest installing your Nest without using the C terminal and configuring the wi-fi as well that will automatically install the upgrade to the Nest.
